Sad Movie (2005 Korean movie)

It was only last night that I have finished watching a 2005 Korean movie. Before watching, I already had the idea that the movie is sad since it is entitled Sad Movie. It began, however, funny, appealing, and somehow complicated. Nevertheless, the movie ended simply, sadly.

It is about two sets of interconnected stories told at once, with stars from the Korean dramas and movies: Shin Min-a and Lee Ki-Woo (A Love to Kill), Lim Su-Jeong (Sorry I Love You / MISA), and Cha Tae Hyun (My Sassy Girl, Lovers Concerto).

I found Min-a’s and Su-Jeong’s usage of sign language in a movie interesting. Ki-woo’s character as an artist was adorable in contrast to his role in Love to Kill. Tae Hyun meanwhile was funny and clever on his portrayal of a Separation Agency owner. The story about a mother and her son was moving, too; the actors, Jung Woo Sung and Yeo Jin-gu, did a great job.

This movie reminded me of those real life stories that end unhappily, but we still find worth sharing. I believe all of us have those kinds of stories. Funny. Appealing. Complicated. Stories we try to recollect, we try to retell. Stories that moved us. That changed the way we think. That started in bliss but ended in sorrow.  That reminded us of those persons whom we loved once. That reminded us that fate somehow had its plans that disagrees our wants. Don’t you have those stories?

As a writer, I have learned from this movie not to focus my eyes on tales with happy conclusions, since not every tale in life ends happily. There are sad stories that are still worth seeing on the big screen.

Just simply recall our lives, or sad ending stories of those close to us and we will find stories that are still worthy to be written as movies. It is not necessary to be complicated.

I really like the simplicity of this movie just being about these random people’s lives and each of their sad endings. None of their stories are really all that significant, it is stuff that could happen every day to any of the billions of random people living in the world, but since you shared in their experience you become their friends in way and when their stories end sadly you really feel for them almost as you would for a real friend.
