The Vineyard Man: Synopsis, Photos

8 April 2007 8 Comments

I really have decided to watch this drama because of Yoon Eun Hye, who starred in Goong or a.k.a. Princess Hours. Her character here is as bubbly as she was in Goong. Some may not consider watching this drama because Oh Man-Seok who played Chang Taek-ki, is incomparable to the looks of Eun Hye’s partner in Goong; but Man-Seok proves himself worthy to watch for.

Further, the story line is interesting. Lee Ji Hyun, played by Eun Hye, is a college undergraduate and strives hard to be a famous fashion designer (like in Goong, but she’s in HS then). She buys clothes and imitate them just for inspiration, she explains. She believes it is her own way of studying.

Fashion design

Unfortunately, her director envies Ji Hyun’s design, so she steals her dress and claims it as her own. Since Ji Hyun has no position in the corporation, no one trusts her when she does complain: the company fires her. Having no job and a debt of 3.5 million won, she accepts the offer of her grandfather to work in his vineyard for one year, and then become the heir of this 2 billion Won worth of land.

It is in the vineyard where Ji Hyun meets Chang Taek-ki. Taek-ki teaches Ji Hyun the work in farm. He is lovable, though rough-looking. He shows dedication and diligence to his work; humor and sweetness to Ji Hyun; has true concern and relates well to every one. He loves the vineyard so much, a true person, a rare to find man.

On the other hand, Ji Hyun always shows that she is that girl from Seoul and reveals her sense of style. At first, she wears stilettos and pretty dresses and skirts while working, but later learns to give up and wear working clothes. Her clothes, however, are still those stylish loose pants and shirts. She uses a chic phone.

Because of their opposing personalities, Lee Ji Hyun and Chang Taek-ki seem not to like each other.
_______

(This is not a sort of review but instead I will now tell you the story if you are not planning to watch it.)

Taek-ki, being the manager of the vineyard, teaches Ji Hyun farming skills. Ji Hyun, however, shows disinterest of acquiring the skills since she is a Seoul girl, a fashion designer wanna-be, and the future heir of the vineyard. She often complains when Taek-ki has to be difficult with her.

But when she learns that her 10 year crush, Kim Kyung Min (Kim Je-Seok), is working as a doctor in a Health Center nearby, she shows interest in staying in the vineyard and learn the farming skills. By inheriting the vineyard, she believes she is worthy to be the wife of a doctor. Kyung Min then shows interest to Ji Hyun and starts dating her.

date

Taek-ki, though pursued by his former lover, is jealous of the attention Ji Hyun is giving to Kyung Min. Unconsciously, Ji Hyun acts jealous whenever she sees Taek-ki and his former lover talk.

Later, Ji Hyun loves framing, and withdraws her intention of selling the land once she inherits it. Despite the obstacles—rains, pests, thieves, gold diggers—in her farmland, she shows perseverance and sincerity of taking care of the land. The dedication that Taek-ki, Grandpa, and the laborers demonstrate enables Ji Hyun to love the vineyard eventually.

VINE

Though Taek-ki and Ji Hyun already share many sweet moments together, they never have the courage to admit that they love each other. Because when Taek-ki is ready to propose to Ji Hyun, Ji Hyun has accepted the marriage Kyung Min offers an hour earlier.

In the last episode, however, Ji Hyun rejects Kyung Min’s marriage. Enraged, Kyung Min confronts Taek-ki in the vineyard, and punches him. It is only then that Taek-ki realizes that Ji Hyun loves her. He immediately drives towards the train station, where Ji Hyun waits the train to Seoul. [She is returning to Seoul since someone is claiming that her son is the true heir of the land.]

train

Taek-ki is able to meet Ji Hyun at the next station, where they confess their love and kiss. Taek-ki and Ji Hyun return to Grandpa’s house and it takes them days before they are able to tell Grandpa that they are now lovers. Anyway, Grandpa already knows but he does not show.

grandpa

Grandpa one day learned that the one claiming his true heir is a fake. He then decided to transfer the title of the land to Ji Hyun. While talking about the transfer, Grandpa opens up to Ji Hyun and Taek-ki that he knows about their relationship. He explains how will he not know; since he is the owner of the vineyard and lives with them.

Grandpa then arranges the wedding of the two immediately and intervenes on the disapproval of Ji Hyun’s mother.

mom

Mother disapproves because Taek-ki is only a farmer, but Ji Hyun fight for him saying he is grateful to marry a true person with a great heart. Besides, Grandpa approves and emphasizes that Taek-ki also owns the vineyard, together with Ji Hyun. And Taek-ki will supports Ji Hyun’s dream of becoming a famous fashion designer with his savings. (Though it does not show, Taek-ki is richer than Ji Hyun. He works and saves well.)

Oh, I forgot to mention. Taek-ki, an orphan, is an M.A. graduate but focuses on managing the vineyard rather than sharing his knowledge in a Research Institute. (He is just the same level with Kyung Min.) This is not just to show gratitude to Grandpa who supported his education but also to prove that it is in the vineyard where his heart resides.

The ending is excellent. No one dies, only two broken hearts: Ji Hyun’s and Taek-ki’s former lovers.

I like this drama. It is a very sweet story, funny, and I’m really satisfied watching it. I love Eun Hye and sweet cool Man Seouk. A guy doesn’t have to be gorgeous. Sometimes having one is very depressing, though it makes us proud. I love the vineyard and to see the life of the countryside people. Especially because in the story, Eun Hye is told to love SUNFLOWERS. They are my favourite too. Anyway, the two characters are great and suit each other. Man Seouk is very smart. I wish I could have a guy who is like him: being humble and innocent but adoring and loving the girl so much. Is there any other movies or drama that Man Seouk stars as the leading role?
